Catalunya-Euskal Herria: solidaritat i respecte

GORA EUSKAL HERRIA ASKATUTA!

VISCA CATALUNYA LLIURE!

Basque separatists' ceasefire in Catalonia
by
Wednesday 18 February 2004 2:03 PM GMT

Spain's armed separatist Basque group ETA on Wednesday called a ceasefire in the northeastern region of Catalonia in a statement broadcast on regional radio.

ETA said it had suspended the "armed struggle" in Catalonia in a truce backdated "to 1 January 2004" in its statement broadcast on the Basque station Radio Euskadi.

In the statement also carried on Catalan radio stations, a spokesman for ETA, which has been blamed for the deaths of 816 people in the past 35 years, said the group "wishes to strengthen links between our (Basque and Catalan) peoples."

ETA saw "numerous points in common between Catalonia and the Basque country, two regions oppressed by the French and Spanish states," it added.

New situation
The spokesman explained the move by alluding to "the new political situation in Catalonia," which last November elected its first left-wing government in the democratic era that dawned with the end of the Franco dictatorship in 1975.

But Spain's Interior Minister Angel Acebes swiftly dismissed the move, saying the announcement would not alter the government stance on ETA.

"We will pursue our strategy of hunting down ETA on the basis of the law, both in Catalonia and in the rest of Spain," Acebes told Spanish state radio.

"This is a truce which benefits only ETA and it is a trap for democracy," Acebes added.

The announcement comes less than two weeks after ETA, fighting for an independent state in the northern Basque region of Spain and parts of southwestern France, warned it would attack tourist areas across Spain all year round.

A wave of attacks last summer injured more than a dozen people at popular east coast resorts but reinforced cooperation between French and Spanish police has led to a wave of ETA arrests.

The conservative Spanish government bitterly opposes plans for greater Basque autonomy by the Basque region moderate nationalist government.

The development comes barely three weeks after the former deputy leader of the Catalan government resigned after admitting to holding a secret meeting in southern France with ETA members.

Josep Lluis Carod Rovira, who fronts the left wing pro-independence Republican Left in the Catalan parliament, in coalition with the Catalan Socialists and a hard left ecologist movement, denied reaching an accord with ETA.

He said he had agreed to the meeting as "I do not want more victims of ETA, nor assassinations or deaths - that's why I spoke with ETA."

ETA declares limited cease-fire

Wednesday, February 18, 2004 Posted: 9:18 AM EST (1418 GMT)

The Basque separatist group ETA has declared a limited cease-fire ahead of next month's Spanish general elections.

In a statement read on regional radio Wednesday, ETA said the cease-fire -- limited to the Catalonia region in the northeast of the country -- had been in place since January 1 but did not say when it would end.

The group, which last declared a 14-month cease-fire in 1998, said it was motivated by "a desire to unite the ties between the Basque and Catalan peoples."

ETA is blamed for more than 800 killings in its 35-year fight for a Basque homeland in northwest Spain. It is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, of which Spain is a member.

Wednesday's move is seen as an encouragement to separatists in northeastern Spain, where Catalonians speak a separate language alongside Spanish.

Interior Minister Angel Acebes described the move as "a trap" and said it was trying to give the impression it had an important role to play.

"It's an announcement which is repulsive to democracy, to reason, to freedom and especially to the victims of terrorism," The Associated Press quoted Acebes as saying.

Others said ETA needed to go much further.

"The only statement I want from ETA is one saying it has broken up and stopped all armed activity in all of Spain," Gaspar Llamazares, head of the United Left coalition, Spain's fourth-ranking political group, told AP.

I als espanyols... ja s'ho faran.

Eta declares Catalonia ceasefire

A video announcing the move was sent to Basque television (EITB)

The militant Basque separatist group Eta has declared a ceasefire for the Spanish region of Catalonia.

Eta said it had suspended "armed actions" in Catalonia as of 1 January 2004 in order to strengthen ties between the Basque and Catalan people.

The news, broadcast by regional media stations, comes weeks after Eta said it was extending its campaign against tourist targets in Spain.

Eta has killed more than 800 people in its campaign since the late 1960s.

Catalunya Radio broadcast a statement from Eta on Wednesday which said the group "had ceased all its activities in the region as of 1 January, 2004 with the aim of uniting ties between the Basque and Catalan peoples on the basis of respect, non-interference and solidarity".

Eta decided to carry out attacks in Catalonia against Spanish and French state interests in the region in the 1980s, the message said, but the political situation had now changed.

A three and a half minute video, sent to Basque public radio and television (EITB), was distributed to other media and broadcast later.

The video showed two apparent members of Eta, wearing white hoods and black berets, reading out the statement, which included "a revolutionary greeting to all the Catalan separatists".

The BBC's Katya Adler, in Madrid, said the Eta statement had sent shockwaves through Spain, which goes to the polls for general elections in March.

The Spanish government and other political parties have criticised the Eta statement.

Secret meeting
Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, who survived an ETA attack on him in 1995, bluntly rejected Eta's move.

He said the Spanish government rejected any negotiation with the group that did not involve its handover of weapons and the criminal prosecution of its members.

He also criticised the Republican Left of Catalonia party Josep Lluis Carod-Rovira for negotiating with the group.

Interior Minister Angel Acebes said the announcement was "repulsive to democracy, to reason, to freedom and especially to the victims of terrorism".

He described it as "a trap" by Eta to give the impression that it had an important role to play.

"We will continue with the same strategy, detaining members of the terrorist organisation."

Opposition leader Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, of the Socialist Party (PSOE) said: "This is inadmissible. I express my complete indignation at this communication."

He also forecast "consequences for the Catalan government".

Gaspar Llamazares, head of the United Left coalition, said: "The only statement I want from Eta is one saying it has broken up and stopped all armed activity in all of Spain."

The Eta statement follows a meeting between group's leaders and Mr Carod-Rovira last month.

Mr Carod-Rovira, whose party is pro-Catalan independence, was forced to resign from his post as second in charge of the regional government after details of the secret meeting emerged.

Dear Sirs,
I would like Catalan to be one of the language options in all the services of the IKEA web site (more than the scarce information given about the IKEA shops in Badalona and l'Hospitalet). Catalan is an official language in a territory of over 10 million inhabitants, and yet, while you have a web site for languages with fewer speakers -as is the case of Icelandic, Finnish, Danish, Slovak, Norwegian, Hebrew, Swedish in Finland, Italian in Switzerland, French in Switzerland, German in Switzerland, Dutch in Belgium and French in Canada-, IKEA treats Catalan as an exception, as if Catalan customers did not deserve the same treatment as all other IKEA customers. That is why I am now addressing you with the idea of soon being able to access all information in your web site in Catalan, as well as to have all your products with labels in Catalan, just as is the case of all the other minority languages mentioned above.
